Story

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
is my favorite composer, and many musicians feel the same way. Despite his very short life, he was one of the greatest, and among them he is perhaps the best loved. His music speaks simply and sincerely to a wide range of listeners, and is both beautiful and profound.
He began as a singer, and soon began writing songs that have never been surpassed. He extended his lyrical style into instrumental music, bringing new depth to works large and small, including symphonies, sonatas and chamber music which were not fully appreciated until much later.
Like many free-lance musicians he led a precarious life, achieving great success only during his final year. By then a long chronic illness had nearly overwhelmed him.
But he was extremely productive during his last year. The piano sonata in B-flat, along with other masterworks written in that year, is many musicians’ favorite music of all. It seems to express this gentle man’s goodbye to the beautiful world that he was about to leave.
